Back from Idea Funding 2009 in Tucson last week, which is an annual conference for entrepreneurs, investors and venture capitalists to gather and discuss funding strategies. Very worthwhile.
TrueCloud was there because cloud-based products, particularly NetSuite which is the only ERP system of it’s kind, just makes so much sense for early start-up companies with growth requirements but neither the time nor the inclination to get tangled up in IT issues.
Many of these businesses are looking to flip their companies in 3 or 4 years and would prefer to avoid a ton of sunk cost in servers, switches, routers etc.
So an interested party (one of many), stopped by our booth and after hearing about the many advantages to cloud-based products he commented, “Where does this word CLOUD come from anyway? Hearing you describe it, it sounds like great news for emerging companies, but I have this vision of cloudiness and confusion because I’m stuck on that word”.
I pointed out that the origin of the word “CLOUD” comes from the telecom industry where it was used to describe the transition from private circuits to virtual circuits and the image they were going for was that customers no longer needed to concern themselves with the underlying infrastructure.
On the drive back to Phoenix, a popular tune from my youth popped into my head. The Joni Mitchell song. “Both Sides Now” from the late 60’s has a verse:
“Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air and feathered canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at CLOUDS that way. But now they only block the sun they rain and snow on everyone, so many things I would have done, but CLOUDS got in my way.”
You can see where I'm going with this. Don’t let clouds get in your way when it comes to deciding on how to run your business!
Traditional IT infrastructure, the plumbing, or the required kit, are all fading away for most users and businesses and will increasingly be left to a set of professional providers who offer it as a utility based service.
